Five Goldfinches and Ruby Baby

I went out to check the roses this morning for The Enemy (Japanese Beetles) and as I approached, five male goldfinches flew up out of my garden to roost in a nearby tree! I don’t know about you, but I get a special thrill out of beautiful birds (bluebirds, indigo buntings and painted buntings also fit this category) flittering around my yard. Ok, woodpeckers fit as well, unless they are banging on the side of the house. It is pretty aggravating to be woken up by the rapid fire banging of a woodpecker, pecking at the wall next to one’s head. ok, think about the goldfinches….

Back to the beetles… only found about eight live ones on the different blooms this morning. They have found the French Lace and the Fragrant Cloud but so far are leaving the red roses alone. Tomorrow is the next spray day. I should just go ahead and deadhead the blooms that they have already destroyed on the Voodoo and JFK but if new ones come, I want them to go to the old flowers (already ravished and treated with bug killer) rather than attack the new buds.

I did get a note back from one of the guys in the RRS who said that he had been able to find the Neem Concentrate at the Lowes in Clayton so I am going to go see if they still have any after I go shoot archery at Steafan’s tonight. I can also get some other stuff I need for projects (a blue pot for the Kitty Hawk, some RTU (ready to use) bug killer for treating blooms… ok, JBs, if you are going to chew on my flowers, you are going to have to pay the price… your life, and some satin polyuerethane for a wood working project). I also need to do some grocery shopping so that will be another thing to do on my way home…

Oh, and the name of the miniature rose that I planted between the Rembrant and the Glowing Peace is Ruby Baby.
