Things are going well with the rose forcing in the house… more on that later…
I know where I am going to be during May…. I think I mentioned before that The Center for Historic Plants (part of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson) has an open house in the spring. Last year I was unable to go there so I have have been checking the website periodically to see when it is schedule for this spring. When I was at Monticello with my parents at Christmas, the info wasn’t available yet. Well, I just rechecked… and it has been scheduled:

CHP Nursery Open House
The thirteenth annual open house at Tufton Farm will feature the rose, iris, and dianthus collections in full bloom, and informal tours of the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants nursery, including the propagation greenhouses, stock beds, and display gardens. Rose expert Dennis Whetzel will be on hand between 1:00 and 2:30 p.m. to informally answer questions and conduct a rose identification workshop. Refreshments will be served, gift plants distributed, and roses will be offered for sale to our special guests from the horticultural community. Call 984-9816 for further information. Noon to 4 p.m. Free.

The Iconography of Roses, ca. 1450 B.C. to 1774
Dr. Art Tucker, research professor at Delaware State University, will return to give a PowerPoint presentation on the visual history of the rose by surveying the evolution of the rose in botanical art. An indispensable Monticello consultant, Art is a singular authority on the history of garden plants. His authoritative yet entertaining lecture style and dazzling props will engage any audience. Arts lecture is the 13th annual Lynn Richmond Memorial Lecture, honoring Monticellos Vegetable Gardener from 1989 – 1994. Reservations required; call 434-984-9822.
